The following article is a summary from the 2023, 2028, and 2049 edition of the Journal of Clinical Pharmacy, published by the UK Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacture Commission.
“Cialis, the active ingredient in Cialis, is a phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitor. It is marketed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction (ED) in adult men.”
A total of 5,831,541 tablets of tadalafil were dispensed in the UK between 1 March 2023 and 31 December 2023.
Cialis (tadalafil) has been licensed by the NHS since its launch, but only by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society. The UK licensed tadalafil for over 30 years.
Although tadalafil was originally patented in 1992, a number of other companies developed tadalafil to produce other pharmaceutical products. Some of these other companies also developed tadalafil and/or tadalafil-containing products, such as the erectile dysfunction drugs Avanafil and Udenafil.
Other medications in the tadalafil class have been marketed for the treatment of ED, including the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), sertraline (Zoloft), duloxetine (Cymbalta), fluvoxamine (Luvox), linezolid, and oral nitrate-containing products such as the blood pressure medications Nitrolingual and Nitro-Dur for blood pressure and heart conditions.
In the past, erectile dysfunction medications were not regulated at all, so the UK Medicines Schedule ( now the General Pharmaceutical Schedule) has been updated, and erectile dysfunction medications are no longer available on prescription, but they were not on the Medicines Schedule. A number of other medications are now available at the same rates for treatment of erectile dysfunction.
However, the UK has not had a firm standard treatment of erectile dysfunction. The NHS, however, has in place a new service called Erectile Dysfunction Specialist Consultation (ESDCS) to assess and treat erectile dysfunction. This is for men who have had a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction and are taking medications for the condition. EEDCS is offered to men who meet the following criteria:
If these criteria are met, the treatment of erectile dysfunction would be the same as for a serious underlying condition.
ESDCS is now regularly updated to take into account the number of men diagnosed with erectile dysfunction.
However, in 2024 there was a rise in prescription of the tadalafil-based medication from 5.6 million to 9.1 million tablets (from 2.3 million tablets in 2017 to 2.7 million in 2024).
Tadalafil is the active ingredient in Cialis and the brand of the tablet.
Other drugs in the tadalafil class have been marketed for the treatment of erectile dysfunction, including the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), sertraline (Zoloft), duloxetine (Cymbalta), fluoxetine (Prozac), linezolid, and oral nitrate-containing products such as the blood pressure medications Nitrolingual and Nitro-Dur for blood pressure and heart conditions.

Cialisis a medication that contains the active ingredient tadalafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) in men. It works by helping to relax the blood vessels in the penis, allowing for increased blood flow and enabling an erection when sexually aroused. However, the effects of Cialis can be more pronounced when taken on an empty stomach, making it one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for ED.
How it worksCialis works by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5). PDE5 breaks down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in the corpus cavernosum, which helps relax the smooth muscle in the corpora cavernosa. This allows the penis to fill with blood, increasing the length and thickness of an erection. Cialis can only be used if you are sexually aroused and have a high-potency drug. The drug should not be taken if you are allergic to tadalafil, other erectile dysfunction drugs such as Viagra, Levitra, or Cialis are also known to interact with it.
How it is takenCialis is usually taken as needed, usually between 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity.
